Care for Onyx Tile

Clicks:    Updated:2015-12-25 17:12:49

Onyx tile is a form of quartz tile that is a little softer than most forms of marble. It comes in three different finishes: honed, polished and tumbled. These finishes determine the look and coloring of the stone, but polished onyx may fare better against spills than other finishes. Onyx tile requires some care and maintenance to keep it aesthetically pleasing. With knowledge of how to care for this stone you can keep your onyx tile looking new for years. Instructions as follows:

Firstly, clean any spills or soap suds immediately, because food and certain chemicals may etch your stone. Only blot the spill with a cloth dampened with warm water. Do not rub it or you run the risk of scratching the surface. Limit exposure of your onyx to any acids or acid-based cleaners, because acids etch onyx.

Secondly, rinse onyx tile in the shower with warm water after every use. Also wipe down an onyx tile counter with a cloth and warm water after use. This will remove any residue that may stain or etch the tile.

Thirdly, wash the tile thoroughly every couple of weeks. Use a stone-safe cleaner, not a detergent, to clean the counter and tile in the shower. The cleaner will list marble or onyx on the package if it is safe to use on that stone. For floors, sweep them first and then use a heavy-duty stone, grout and tile cleaner and a swivel head mop to clean the floor.
